About us

Czechs and Kenyans joined together and created an alternative travel service in the environment of no less interesting places in the Kenyan metropolis Nairobi. The main place we are focusing on is Kibera.

About Kibera

Kibera (Kinubi: Forest or Jungle) is a division of Nairobi Area, Kenya, and neighborhood of the city of Nairobi, 6.6 kilometers (4.1 mi) from the city center.

Kibera is the largest slum in Nairobi, and the largest urban slum in Africa.

The 2009 Kenya Population and Housing Census reports Kibera's population as 170,070, contrary to previous estimates of one or two million people. Other sources suggest the total Kibera population may be 500,000 to well over 1,000,000 depending on which slums are included in defining Kibera.

Inside the slums

Behind the project

Our service was created thanks to the czech documentary: Kibera - the story of a slum which was filmed in 2017 and where the main character was portrayed by documentary photographer Don Wilson Odhiambo. Don was approached by an enthusiastic businessman from the Czech Republic and together we tried to create a simple and socially responsible service that also promotes Don's work.

In some people a slum tour can stir a controversy which we try to prevent with code of ethics and socially sustainable business. Thanks to Bigslums, we want to establish contacts with other local traders and come up with new services or products as part of local help.

Explore Kibera with us! Kibera is a place of endless possibilities and you can choose according to your preferences - see tours.

My name is Donwilson Odongo, I'm an independent Documentary photojournalist from Kibera Slums Nairobi. Currently, as a freelancer focusing on storytelling the human and societal norms, I document the social, cultural, political and economic activities on the day to day life of the slum dwellers.

I run and manage Website https://www.donwilsonodhiambo.com/ and my blog (donwilsonkibera.wordpress.com) which focuses on my art of photography storytelling. Also through my Instagram account https://www.instagram.com/donwilsonodongo/.

With enough experience and knowledge in photography, I've always had a dream of being able to share my piece of art with the world outside my boundaries. My concept is to transform an image into a piece of art through my lens as the paintbrush.

Photography allows my individuality to be successfully asserted and has also been my way of learning how to approach people differently depending on their position, naivety or power during my daily field works.
